Impact factor is always a good indicator for deciding which confrences/journals are more important from the domain experts' view. For example, ISI provides a journal impact factor report. Science gateway has a collection of selected journals, with many statistical information about the citations, etc.
Personally, I only use Citeseer impact rating for a rough idea of what journals/confs/etc. are important for the past few years.
